Worked on field sketches this week (and had a midterm! Oy!). This is a sampling. Perhaps it’s all the birdsong I’m surrounded with these days – spring is coming to New England – but I’m obsessed with drawing birds. Here’s a quick sketch of a sweet Goldfinch.
I’m working on a Natural History Illustration certificate from the University of Newcastle in Australia, and this is a snippet from my warm-up, sketchbook assignment this week.
Here’s a sketch and some thumbnails for the project. This week I’m focusing on Elf Owls. Check out my Instagram feed below to see every day progress. I’ll post the final piece on the blog next Monday!
In this post I talk about meditation and offer a recent thumbnail sketch of my visualization practice.
So what started out as a simple practice sketch of an interesting tree from a reference photo is turning out to be an illustration of a tree hollow based on several references and my imagination!
Spring means being able to draw outside again. It’s just too cold, but thank goodness for the reference photos I’ve taken over the years. Still there is a starkness to winter trees that I love, especially when they are in silhouette. It’s a very graphic feel. Also, you know how mad I am about tree roots. Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall – you’ll always find me sketching tree roots!
