I’m coming upon my 1 year meditation anniversary, and it’s been interesting to see how far I’ve come. I tried meditation over and over for the past 20 years in yoga class and just could never get the hang of it. Last year right before my birthday I participated in Headspace‘s free 10-day challenge. And I meditated! So I treated myself to a full year membership. It hasn’t been easy – there have been setbacks – but I love it.
What’s cool is that meditation is now incorporated into the daily flow of my life. While I have a set time of an hour a day to meditate and journal, I also meditate for mere minutes. I’ll pause for a couple minutes of slow breathing to calm anxiety and focus. I meditate for seconds to center myself before an important call. I’ll use it to sort through an issue. I even meditate because I’m happy in that moment and want to express gratitude. Nobody – until Headspace – ever showed me how versatile it is!
I still use Headspace, but I’ve branched out (ha! pun intended!) and use other meditations from various teachers. I’ve even made up my own grounding meditation. Basically with the soles of my feet flat on the ground, I visualize that I fall through my soles to the center of the Earth and land on a grassy surface (think Ireland – because I am!). I land on my feet, which then root into the lush grass and soil. There’s more but to cut to the chase – I become a tree.
I’ve been making many thumbnail sketches of the visualization lately. It’s an image that’s been dogging me for a while. The one you see here is actually quite small. When I’ve made a thumbnail I really like – that really reflects what I see in my mind – I’ll develop it, but for now I’m really enjoying releasing iterations in my sketchbook!
